Due to Puerto Rico’s unique territorial status, it is often difficult to separate sports from politics. While many sports mavens argue that those events featuring the island’s national athletes are responsible for uniting the politically divided island, a recent decision made by the International Olympic Committee last weekend questions attempts to see athletic contests as the unifying element of national solidarity among Puerto Ricans.

Once again, national sports have been integrated into the political debate of the island as the IOC General Assembly determined last weekend to expel the former Netherlands Antilles from the world’s governing body in Olympic sports.
