Fue una noche distinta en la rica historia del baloncesto puertorriqueño. La elegancia que siempre caracteriza la celebración de partidos dentro del impresionante Coliseo de Puerto Rico tuvo un toque de solemnidad en memoria del ex integrante de los Cangrejeros de Santurce y Vaqueros de Bayamón, Robert “Tractor” Traylor.

 Tenían a su fanaticada apoyándolos, pero la ventaja de cancha local no fue suficiente. En una de las semifinales de la NCAA, los voleibolistas puertorriqueños Dennis Del Valle y Edgardo Goas culminaron su temporada 2011 anoche luego de que su equipo de Penn State cayera en cuatro parciales (25-18, 24-26, 25-22, 25-23) ante los Buckeyes de Ohio State.

Los voleibolistas puertorriqueños Dennis Del Valle y Edgardo Goas hablan sobre las posibilidades de su equipo de Penn State en el "Final Four" 2011. Previo a su choque semi-finalista ante Ohio State, ambos expresan optimismo de cara al importante partido.

Obama / Hogan 2012: The Hulkster is back!

“Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States…” With those words, the start of Barack Obama’s speech at the 2011 WHCA (White House Correspondents’ Association) gala was officially announced. But this was not just another formal entrance made by a celebrity-politician at the beginning of a banquet sponsored by a nationally renowned American journalism organization. On the contrary, the presentation was “carnivalesque” and had a taste of patriotism with a special flavor from the glorious 80s decade. Recent questionings of Barack’s “Americaness” made by Donald Trump justified any attempt to deviate from tradition. President Obama made a triumphant entrance to the official WHCA podium and Hulk Hogan’s “Real American” song delighted a surprised audience that ranged from “non-profit” journalism organizations like NPR to corporate moguls such as Fox News, MSNBC, and of course, Mr. Donald Trump.

Being an old school professional wrestling fan, I have to admit that Obama’s creative entrance to the banquet was inspiring and powerful. Despite my opposition to many recent American foreign interventions and a whole life denouncing U.S. colonialism in Puerto Rico, hearing that legendary song gave me some small pride on being one of the few graduate students at Penn State that supports and follows the spectacle of excesses known as professional wrestling. I knew someday Barack was going to compensate me for the loan (vote) that he received during the 2008 presidential elections. Yes, he did!

Rick Pitino is out: A better opportunity for Puerto Rican basketball

It’s official.  The Puerto Rican Basketball Federation (PRBF) and Rick Pitino agreed to end the contract that gave Louisville’s head coach the technical and training management of the island’s national team for the upcoming FIBA-Americas Olympic qualifying tournament to be held in Mar del Plata, Argentina during the months of August and September. 

The NCAA’s refusal to allow the Louisville Cardinals to train in Puerto Rico this summer was seen as an obstacle by both Pitino and the PRBF.  The original agreement between these two parts stated that Pitino was not going to earn a salary for coaching the Puerto Rican national team.  Under this contract, the PRBF would have only provided the funding to cover the coach’s traveling costs.  In exchange for his “free” services, Rick Pitino’s college team was expected and authorized (by the PRBF) to train in Puerto Rico, and participate in scrimmage games against the island’s national basketball representation. 

In the end, the NCAA did not approve this summer training camp for the Cardinals, and the PRBF-Pitino agreement was canceled.

These are good news for the Puerto Rican national team.  Now, the PRBF will have the opportunity to hire a full-time coach who can start training early this summer without the distractions and demands that result from coaching a college franchise.  In addition to this possibility, the new technical manager can also continue on the position after the FIBA-Americas Cup, prepare young talent for the 2011 Pan-American Games and be part of a long-term restructuring project for the benefit of all basketball programs on the island of Puerto Rico.
